Year 8 Manchester & Alton Towers Tour 2026 – Three Days of Adventure, Friendship and Lifelong Memories

One hundred and twenty Year 8 Abbey students recently returned home from an unforgettable three-day adventure to Manchester and Alton Towers, bringing to a close another hugely successful annual tour that perfectly captured everything that makes life at the Abbey so special.

From the moment the boys departed 77A Ashgrove Road in the early hours of the morning, the excitement was palpable. Following the journey to Dublin Port, the group boarded the Irish Ferries sailing before travelling onwards to Manchester, ready for three action-packed days of fun, friendship and unforgettable experiences.

The first stop on the itinerary was one that many of the boys had been eagerly anticipating—Old Trafford, the iconic home of Manchester United. Walking through one of the world’s most famous football stadiums was a dream come true for many of our young supporters, giving them the opportunity to experience first-hand the history and atmosphere of one of football’s greatest venues.

The adventure continued with a visit to the Trafford Centre, where students enjoyed dinner, bowling and some well-earned free time exploring one of the UK’s largest shopping and leisure destinations. It quickly became clear that while football was a highlight, shopping proved equally popular, with many boys returning carrying bags full of purchases that may or may not have been entirely necessary!

A particularly memorable moment on the opening day came as the Abbey community celebrated the birthdays of Niall, Fergal and Keegan. A spontaneous rendition of “Happy Birthday” outside the Trafford Centre ensured their special day became one they will never forget.

After an exciting first day, the group settled into their accommodation at YHA Manchester, whose staff once again provided a warm welcome for the Abbey party. Despite the packed itinerary, it soon became apparent that convincing 120 excited twelve-year-olds to sleep would prove one of the biggest challenges of the trip!

Day two saw the group travel to Alton Towers Resort, where excitement reached another level as the boys tackled some of the biggest and most thrilling rides in the country. Rollercoasters, water rides and attractions of every kind were enjoyed from morning until evening, with students embracing every opportunity to test their courage and enjoy the experience with their friends.

The laughter, excitement and smiles throughout the day perfectly reflected the spirit of the trip. While many conquered rides they had never imagined they would attempt, others discovered that the gift shops offered just as much excitement, with many boys enthusiastically spending what could only be described as remarkable amounts of money on souvenirs that will undoubtedly become treasured reminders of the tour.

Following the thrills of Alton Towers, the group returned once again to the Trafford Centre where they enjoyed dinner, visited the amusements and squeezed in a little more shopping before another lively evening together.

Perhaps the most rewarding moment of the entire trip came not on a rollercoaster or in a football stadium, but while watching the boys confidently make their way around the Trafford Centre. Seeing their growing independence, their friendships flourish and the genuine joy on their faces reminded staff exactly why these annual tours are so important. Months of planning were rewarded by witnessing young people creating memories that will stay with them long after their school days have ended.

Throughout the three days, the Year 8 boys were outstanding ambassadors for Abbey CBS. Their excellent behaviour, good manners, enthusiasm and respect for others drew praise wherever they went. They represented themselves, their families and the school with great pride, demonstrating the values that are central to Abbey life.

The final morning allowed for one last farewell to Manchester before the group boarded the return ferry home. Before leaving, congratulations were also extended to four Abbey students—Ronan Sheppard, Callum Murphy, Cillian Conlon and Charlie McCreesh—who had been selected as Armagh All Stars, a tremendous sporting achievement and one worthy of special recognition during the tour.

By late evening, all 120 boys had been safely reunited with their families after what can only be described as an extraordinary few days away. Tired but smiling, they returned home with countless stories, new friendships strengthened and memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Trips of this scale simply do not happen by chance. The Abbey extends its sincere gratitude to the outstanding team whose dedication, organisation and generosity made the experience possible. A special word of thanks goes to Richmond Coaches and to Ryan, Randall and Sean, whose professionalism, good humour and support throughout the journey ensured everything ran smoothly from beginning to end.

Most importantly, heartfelt thanks are due to the Abbey staff who willingly gave up their own time to accompany the boys. Their commitment, care and enthusiasm allowed our students to enjoy experiences beyond the classroom that help shape confidence, independence and lifelong friendships. Their efforts often go unseen, but they are deeply appreciated by students, parents and the entire Abbey community.

The annual Manchester tour has once again demonstrated that education is about far more than books and classrooms. It is about developing young people, building relationships, creating opportunities and making memories that remain long after the journey home.
