Seachtain na Gaeilge

Date Posted: 9th March 2017

Next week is Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish language week) throughout Ireland.  This national event culminates in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations across the country.  The Irish Department will be organising a series of events across the school to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge.  The Christian Brothers played a key role in the Irish language revival in the late 1800s and were the first to teach Irish in their schools in the town of Newry at that time. Throughout the last century the Brothers worked tirelessly to promote the language and  foster a sense of identity and affinity with the language in generations of Abbey students. Next week we hope to raise awareness of the role played by the Brothers in the revival and survival of the Irish language in this community and place the Irish language at the heart of our school for the duration of Seachtain na Gaeilge.
