Abbey Physics Department Educational Visit to CERN, Geneva

Students from the Abbey Physics Department recently returned from an unforgettable educational visit to Geneva, Switzerland, where they experienced first-hand the fascinating world of modern science during an action-packed four-day trip to the world-renowned CERN research facility.

The visit marked a significant milestone for the department as it was the first collaborative educational trip with our neighbours, Our Lady’s Grammar School, bringing together students from both schools to share a unique learning experience while building new friendships along the way.

Following an early departure, the group arrived safely in Geneva and immediately began making the most of their time in one of Europe’s most beautiful and historic cities. After settling into their accommodation, students explored the picturesque Old Quarter before enjoying a guided tour of the United Nations Headquarters, gaining an insight into the work of one of the world’s most important international organisations. The opening day perfectly combined history, culture and global citizenship, setting the tone for an exceptional trip.

The highlight of the visit came on the second day as students travelled to CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research and the world’s leading centre for particle physics. The group enjoyed an inspiring guided tour of the facility, including visits to the impressive Main Control Centre and the internationally recognised ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) detector.

For many students, seeing one of the world’s greatest scientific research centres first-hand was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Learning about the cutting-edge research taking place at CERN allowed classroom theory to come alive, inspiring curiosity and offering a glimpse into the exciting possibilities that exist within careers in science, technology and engineering.

Following a fascinating morning of scientific discovery, the group enjoyed a traditional Swiss dining experience at Restaurant Edelweiss, where students sampled local cuisine before taking advantage of the warm weather with a relaxing afternoon by Geneva’s beautiful waterfront.

Day three provided a wonderful balance between education and recreation. Students began the morning exploring the tranquil Jardin Botanique de Genève, discovering the rich variety of plant life from around the world before visiting the Museum of the History of Science, where they learned how scientific discoveries and innovation have transformed our understanding of the world over many centuries.

Later in the day, everyone enjoyed a relaxing cruise across the stunning waters of Lake Geneva, taking in spectacular views of the city and the surrounding Alps. The evening concluded with the ever-popular Cube Challenge team games, where teamwork, communication, friendly competition and plenty of laughter ensured a memorable end to another fantastic day.

Before beginning the journey home, students enjoyed some final free time exploring Geneva’s charming Old Quarter, giving them one last opportunity to experience the city’s unique atmosphere and reflect on an unforgettable few days together.

The group returned safely to Newry having created memories that will last a lifetime. Throughout the trip, the students represented both the Abbey and Our Lady’s Grammar School with outstanding maturity, respect and enthusiasm. Their excellent behaviour, positive attitude and willingness to embrace every opportunity made them exceptional ambassadors for their schools and for Northern Ireland.

Their commitment ensured that students enjoyed not only an academically enriching visit but also an unforgettable cultural experience beyond the classroom.

Educational visits such as this are an invaluable part of school life, allowing students to connect their classroom learning with real-world experiences while developing independence, confidence and lasting friendships. The CERN trip perfectly demonstrated how learning extends far beyond the classroom, inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.

It was a truly memorable adventure filled with discovery, collaboration and lifelong memories—and one that will undoubtedly inspire our students for many years to come.
