Spanish is a very widely spoken world language not only in Spain and South America but more and more in the USA. Spanish therefore provides students with a breadth of opportunities in the worlds of commerce and business.
Many of our past students are currently studying Spanish along with law, business and finance at university level
At the Abbey Grammar School, all students in Years 9 & 10 study Spanish for 3 periods per week.
In Years 9 & 10, we build upon the knowledge and skills already acquired in Year 8 when all students study French and Irish.
All students in the Junior School are provided with booklets which have been produced by the teaching staff of the Spanish Department and which are uniquely tailored to the requirements of our pupils. All pupils are provided with listening materials to accompany the units in their workbook.
At the end of Key Stage 3, students can choose to pursue their study of Spanish to GCSE level. All students of GCSE Spanish have 4 periods per week.
All students at GCSE are provided with learning resources which have been produced by the teaching staff of the Spanish Department and which meet the requirements of the CCEA specification for GCSE Spanish.
GCE A Level
At the end of Key Stage 4, students can choose to pursue their study of Spanish to A level. Students of A Level Spanish have 9 periods per week.
In the 1st term of Lower 6th, students are led through a comprehensive revision and consolidation programme in order to bridge the gap between the demands of GCSE and A Level.
In our Department, we have produced a range of Teaching and Learning materials which cover all aspects of the AS & A2 Spanish course in line with the CCEA specification.
All students at AS and A2 Level have weekly classes with the Spanish Language Assistant. Within the department we have produced detailed guidance to ensure that students make the most of their contact time with the Spanish Language Assistant.
